Lastman welcomes provincial aid; joins in demand for federal assistance

Toronto - Mayor Mel Lastman today welcomed Ontario Premier Ernie Eves'
announcement of a compensation package for municipalities adversely affected by
the power outage that left much of southern Ontario in the dark.

"The City of Toronto and its emergency services worked around the clock to keep
our citizens safe during the blackout," Lastman said. "Any assistance from the
province is welcome - but we should receive 100 per cent of our extraordinary
costs. Anything less shortchanges our taxpayers."

Lastman echoed Eves' demand that the Chretien government stop ignoring the
citizens of Ontario who sent 100 Liberal MPs to Ottawa in the last general
election.

"We're still waiting for a meaningful response from the federal government to
the SARS crisis," Lastman said. "Give us the disaster relief funding we need."
