Equal Access Children's Playground Opens Saturday

The official opening of the first stage of the Ed McCleverty Equal Access
Children's Playground, one of the largest of its kind in Canada, will take
place on Saturday, August 29, 1998 at 11:45 a.m. at the East Toronto Athletic
Field (Main Street and Gerrard Street).

Councillors Tom Jakobek and Sandra Bussin (Ward 26 - Toronto East) will
participate in the opening ceremonies which will include the unveiling of a
ceremonial plaque and cake cutting ceremony. Ken Shaw of CFTO-TV will act as
Master of Ceremonies for the event.

One of the largest accessible playgrounds in Canada, the park has been
redesigned to provide access for children that are physically or mentally
challenged.

A variety of components have been created for the park which provide users with
an opportunity to develop coordination, language and negotiation skills,
hand-eye coordination and strength in addition to having fun.

The project is a joint venture between the Parkwoods Civitan Club and the City
of Toronto. As a member of the Parkwoods Civitan Club, Ed McCleverty was the
driving force behind the Equal Access Children?s Playground concept. Following
his death in October 1995, members of the Civitan Club have committed to seeing
through Ed's vision.
