Jane Pitfield has been elected Councillor for Ward 1 (East York), City of
Toronto, after a by-election on Thursday, September 24, 1998.

Voter turnout was 19.2% with 14,485 ballots cast. There are approximately
76,000 eligible voters in the ward.

The official results are as follows:

Candidate / Number of Votes

Jane Pitfield / 6,169
Gord Crann / 4,320
John Antonopoulos / 1,941
John Papadakis / 1,353
Stuart Ian Weinstein / 293
Kevin Mark Clarke / 217
Sophie Nunziata-Tsolakopoulos / 150
Dide Maxted / 36

"The by-election was a terrific success from the City's perspective," said
Novina Wong, City Clerk for the City of Toronto. "About 300 people, mostly
from East York, worked hard at the advance polls and on election day to make
sure things ran smoothly, the automated voting system worked quickly and
efficiently and results were completed 25 minutes after the polls closed. In
addition, electors responded well to the request that they provide personal
identification to receive a ballot."
