Committee on the Status of Women Pleased with Apology to Jane Doe

Toronto City Council's Committee on the Status of Women is pleased that City
Council has endorsed the recommendations of the committee with respect to the
case of Jane Doe at its meeting July 8 - 10.

"I believe City Council has, after 12 long years, taken a step forward by
issuing an apology to Jane Doe and the women of Toronto - it's long overdue,"
said Pam McConnell, chair of the Committee on the Status of Women.

"The Committee on the Status of Women has always been very concerned with the
quality and justice for all and we are hopeful that the apology will go a long
way in healing the wounds Jane Doe has suffered," added Margaret Jackson,
vice-chair of the Committee on the Status of Women.

City Council also supported the request that the Toronto Police Services Board
not appeal the recent court decision in the Jane Doe case and that a systems
audit take place regarding the handling of sexual assault and family violence
cases by the police.

The audit, to be conducted by the office of the City Auditor, will investigate
how the recommendations from the Godfrey Task Force, Justice Archie Campbell's
review of the Bernardo Investigation, the coroner's Inquest into the murder of
Arlene May and other existing domestic violence policies are being implemented
by the Police Services Board.

City Council also established a community reference group to advise the auditor
during this review.

"I am confident this audit will enable the police force to move forward to
improve efforts in the handling of sexual assault and family violence cases in
the future," added McConnell. "Hopefully, that's the lasting benefit of the
Jane Doe case."
