Statement from Mayor David Miller on the passing of Canadian Opera Company director Richard Bradshaw

“I was terribly saddened to learn of the sudden passing of my friend Richard Bradshaw.

“Richard was a cultural icon. He elevated opera to new heights in this city and found a home for it. Without his leadership, tenacity and passion the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, the best modern opera house in the world, would never have been built.

“Under his direction, the Canadian Opera Company became a truly great and award-winning company.

“His loss is a devastating blow that will be felt in Toronto, across Canada and around the world.

“On behalf of all Torontonians, I extend my deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues.

“Richard will be missed but his contributions and his legacy shall live on at the corner of Queen Street and University Avenue and anywhere else opera is heard.”
