Youth gets Burned playing with Firecrackers

Just before 4:00PM today, Toronto Fire Services crews responded to the report of an apartment fire at 1570 Jane Street.

The fire started and was contained to the bedroom area on the 2nd floor of the 6 storey high rise building.

Unfortunately, not everyone has heard the message regarding fireworks safety. The cause of the fire was determined to be a youth playing with firecrackers and lighters in a bedroom while the father was resting in another room. In doing so, the youth caused a total of $75 000 damage to the building and contents but worse was the person received minor 1st degree burns to the hands, by attempting to put out the fire on the bed. The person was transported to North York General Hospital and treated for their injuries.

16 fire trucks and 50 firefighters responded to the scene.

A reminder: Responsible adults should handle all fireworks by keeping them out of reach of children, preferably in a locked cupboard or drawer.
