Mayor David Miller proclaims May as Asian and South Asian Heritage Month

Mayor David Miller has issued proclamations recognizing May as Asian Heritage Month and South Asian Heritage Month. Immigrants from Asia constitute the largest source of immigration to Toronto and celebrations during this month pay tribute to the contributions made by people of Asian and South Asian heritage to the social, cultural, economic and political life of our city.

May 5, 1838 is the first recorded date of arrival of South Asian people to Canada. The Government of Ontario recognized this date with the enactment of Bill 98 in 2001 to proclaim May as South Asian Heritage Month and May 5 as South Asian Arrival Day. The Senate of Canada unanimously passed a resolution in December 2001 recognizing May as Asian Heritage Month.

To recognize the heritage of these communities, displays will be in the Rotunda of Toronto City Hall during the week of May 14-18. Many workshops and lectures are also being held across the city by various institutions and community organizations.

Toronto is Canada’s largest city and sixth largest government, and home to a diverse population of about 2.6 million people. It is the economic engine of Canada and one of the greenest and most creative cities in North America. In the past three years Toronto has won more than 50 awards for quality and innovation in delivering public services. Toronto’s government is dedicated to prosperity, opportunity and liveability for all its residents.
