Statement from Mayor David Miller on Chief Blair’s investigation into FIFA U-20 soccer incident

“The release today of Chief Blair’s report on this regrettable incident should bring to a close any questions about the actions of Toronto Police officers during an incident following the FIFA U-20 World Cup match between Chile and Argentina on July 19.

“I have been fully briefed by Chief Blair on his report. Independent witnesses confirmed that our officers acted within their authority to protect themselves and contain the situation.

“I applaud the Duty Inspector at the scene who worked with FIFA and Chilean officials and others to return the players to the care of their delegation without charges.

“I understand the concerns expressed publicly by supporters of the Chilean soccer team. However, the facts are very clear: the officers involved acted professionally and responsibly in very difficult and emotional circumstances.”
