Santa and Sonia Rodriguez, the National Ballet's prima ballerina, team up to entertain children
There were 30 enraptured children at City Hall today when Santa Claus and the
Sugar Plum Fairy entered the City Hall rotunda to entertain them. Patricia
Landry of Parks and Recreation, the emcee for the event, read the story of the
Nutcracker to the children. Santa and Sonia Rodriguez, who was dressed as the
sugar plum fairy, handed out sugar plums.

The event was staged to let people know that the City of Toronto and the
National Ballet of Canada are working together to promote their respective
Nutcracker events.

Sonia Rodriguez plays the part of the sugar plum fairy in the National Ballet's
upcoming production of James Kudelka's Nutcracker, which opens at the
Hummingbird Centre on December 16. (Ticket information: 416-345-9595)

The opening celebration for the Allan Gardens and Centennial Park Christmas
flower shows, both featuring topiary masterpieces, includes giant ballet shoes
and a life-sized Nutcracker. The free event will take place at Allan Gardens on
December 2, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The opening celebrations include a visit by
Father Christmas, hot cider and cookies, horse and buggy rides, and children's
outdoor activities. Visitors can also see the conservatory by candlelight from
4 to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 416-392-7288.
