Mac's convenience stores support Not To Kids program
Toronto Public Health -- Tomorrow, tobacco enforcement officers and
nurses from Toronto Public Health, and community partners will be at four Mac's
convenience stores to provide information on the Not To Kids campaign.

The Not To Kids campaign educates tobacco retailers and the community that it
is against the law to sell, buy for, or give tobacco products to anyone under
the age of 19. Along with a healthy message, these four stores are offering
special prizes and giveaways.

"Mac's is working together with the community to prevent the sale and supply of
cigarettes to kids," said Chris Gilbert, Mac's Director of Operations, Toronto
District. "As a responsible retailer, we offer training to our store operators
and staff so they are aware of the laws and penalties. An independent company
also monitors our stores on a regular basis to ensure our compliance rate is

"This campaign has decreased the number of stores selling to kids and has
increased community awareness of the law," said Dr. Sheela Basrur, Medical
Officer of Health for Toronto. "Anyone selling or supplying cigarettes to young
people is breaking the law and contributing to a serious addiction that can
result in many health problems."

Not to Kids is a collaborative initiative between the Canadian Cancer Society,
Council for Tobacco Free Toronto, East End Community Health Centre, Health
Canada, Mac's Convenience Stores Inc., Toronto Public Health, Toronto Catholic
District School Board, Toronto District School Board and Youthlink.
