Governments, community combine forces on one-stop employment centre

Toronto -- The East York Community Employment Centre continues to be a
success story in progress as it fosters a unique partnership between government
and the community for the benefit of people who are unemployed. At this centre,
two levels of government and a team of community partners are working together
in one location to provide employment resource services.

The Employment Centre is a joint venture between the City of Toronto, Human
Resources Development Canada (HRDC), the Centre for Education and Training,
East Toronto Employment Centre for Newcomers to Canada, and the YWCA of Greater
Toronto. Each organization is providing distinct yet linked services, so that
clients using the centre have a one-stop shop for many, if not all, of their
job search needs.

The centre offers a wide range of services, including computers and equipment,
computer tutorials, an extensive job and training resource library,
professional job search coaches, labour market research, help with in-depth
career planning and assessment, referrals to other resources and community
agencies, networking opportunities, assistance with resumes and covering
letters, information on Ontario Works options, and information on such needs as
housing, food banks, English as a second language, adult education, legal aid,
health issues, childcare and other income support programs.

Since the centre opened in 1998, almost 50,000 clients have used the facility.
A demographic breakdown indicates that 56 per cent of users are clients of
Toronto Social Services, 10 per cent are currently receiving employment
insurance benefits, and 21 per cent are Reachback clients.

Co-ordinated by the Centre for Education and Training, the East York Community
Employment Centre is open to the general public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. With referrals from Toronto Social Services, HRDC, community agencies
and through word of mouth, the centre continues to provide a critical one-stop
resource service for people seeking independence through employment.
