Media Advisory: City demonstrates the power of electric bicycles at the Smog Summit

Date: Thursday, June 21
Time: 12 to 1 p.m.
Place: Metro Hall Square, 55 John Street (corner of King and John streets)

The City of Toronto's Moving the Economy (MTE) initiative is inviting members
of the media to test drive power-assisted electric bicycles at the Smog Summit.
MTE is celebrating Transport Canada's new federal regulatory amendment to the
Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations.

The amendment allows the introduction of power-assisted bicycles in Canada. The
Ontario Ministry of Transportation is still completing its review process on
how to safely integrate power-assisted bicycles onto the province's roadways.

Moving the Economy is a partnership founded by the City of Toronto,
Transportation Options and Human Resources Development Canada. MTE recently
received funding from the Toronto Atmospheric Fund to support Phase II of the
Toronto Electric Bike Project.

Members of the public are encouraged to register for the free Smog Summit 2001
that takes place from 9 to 4:30 p.m. in Metro Hall's council chamber. To
register on line, visit www.city.toronto.on.ca
/taf/smog_summit.htm
or call the Toronto Atmospheric Fund office at
416-392-0271.
