Media Advisory: Let the Games begin
  
Parks and Recreation -- Youth from across the city will come together this
weekend for the second annual Toronto Youth Games. Communities from across
Toronto will be represented by 32 teams of 16 members each, between the ages of
13 and 16 years. During the two-day event, young athletes will compete in a
variety of sports activities including volleyball, pentathlon, wheelchair
basketball, swimming and a relay race.

The opening ceremonies will feature remarks by Deputy Mayor Case Ootes and
Councillor Maria Augimeri (York Centre), in addition to a colourful parade of
athletes and entertainment by the York Lions Steel Band, Seneca College
Gymnasts, the Eklipz Dancers and a martial arts troupe.

The Toronto Youth Games are a project of Toronto Parks and Recreation with the
generous support of T. Litzen Sports Ltd, Pepsi, Nike, and Kinko's.


Opening ceremonies

Date: Saturday, August 11
Time: 9 a.m.
Place: Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University
4700 Keele Street

The Toronto Youth Games 2001 will start after the opening ceremonies and
continue until 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 11. The games will re-commence at
10 a.m. on Sunday, August 12 and continue until the closing ceremonies at 3
p.m.
