David Gunn signs on as Special Advisor
Mayor Mel Lastman, Deputy Mayor Case Ootes and Acting Chief Administrative
Officer Shirley Hoy today confirmed that David Gunn has agreed to become a
Special Advisor on a part-time, temporary, contract basis.

Mr. Gunn will report directly to Ms. Hoy and work with her and staff reviewing
the City's budget process. The goal is to find new opportunities for the City
to reduce both operating and capital costs.

"We expect that Mr. Gunn will help us find even better ways to manage costs.
We need to show that our own house is in good order if we want a new
relationship with the Province," said Mr. Ootes.

"I look forward to working with Mr. Gunn and building on the progress staff
have made," said Ms. Hoy.

The review will begin with the 2001 budget debriefing. The main focus is to
ensure that appropriate controls are in place for staffing, salaries and
expenditures across the corporation. Assessing how to use the budget process as
a tool for continuous improvement is a top priority.

"We want to build upon Mr. Gunn's expertise. We want to fit it within the
existing work underway with the administration. We'll bring forward
opportunities to gain his advice within those existing work programs and thus
ensure the best outcome for the city," said Ms. Hoy.

Mr. Gunn is former Chief General Manager of the Toronto Transit Commission.
He will start work with the City the week of July 16.
