Councillor Joe Pantalone named Chair of Waterfront Reference Group

At the inaugural meeting of City Council's Waterfront Reference Group held on
July 12, Councillor Joe Pantalone was named Chair.

"I am looking forward to working with my fellow councillors, the public and the
Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation to guide the renewal of Toronto's
waterfront to the benefit of all residents," said Councillor Joe Pantalone.
"This initiative will improve the Toronto waterfront and bring enormous social,
economic and environmental benefits to the city."

City Council approved the creation of the Reference Group on May 31 as part of
the governance structure for waterfront renewal. Reporting to the Policy and
Finance Committee, the group will review the plans of the Revitalization
Corporation on Council's behalf to ensure co-ordination with the City's
waterfront-related businesses and will advise departments and agencies as well
as standing committees of Council and City Council. The Reference Group will
regularly consult with waterfront area residents associations and businesses.

Also at today's meeting, the Reference Group recommended Robert Fung as Chair
of the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation. Comprising private
citizens, the Revitalization Corporation is responsible for overseeing the
renewal of Toronto's 46-kilometre waterfront. Both the Government of Canada
and the Province of Ontario have endorsed Mr. Fung as the Chair of the
corporation.

"We are pleased to recommend to Council the appointment of Robert Fung as Chair
of the corporation," said Councillor Joe Pantalone. "Mr. Fung has proven an
effective business leader and visionary who will lead the public/private
partnership that will undertake one of the most significant projects in the
history of Toronto."

On June 26, Council appointed Councillors Gerry Altobello, Brian Ashton, Betty
Disero, Ron Moeser, Irene Jones and David Shiner to the Waterfront Reference
Group. Mayor Mel Lastman and Councillor Joe Pantalone, Chair of the Planning
and Transportation Committee, are ex-officio members. An additional Council
member from the City's Sustainability Round Table will also be appointed to the
group.
