City commemorates Ed Mirvish's 90th birthday with a plaque at Honest Ed's | | | | |
On Monday, July 19, the City of Toronto will honour Honest Ed Mirvish with a
plaque dedication celebrating his 90th birthday - July 24, 2004. The plaque has
been set into the sidewalk and will be unveiled at noon in front of Honest
Ed's, located at
581 Bloor St. W., after a reception at 11:30 a.m. Mayor David Miller and the
City of Toronto have also decided to officially name July 25 as "Ed Mirvish
Day," a day for the public to celebrate Honest Ed's birthday.
"I am deeply touched and honoured that Mayor David Miller and Toronto City
Council have dedicated a plaque to me for my 90th birthday," said Mr. Mirvish.
"I thank them and the people of Toronto for a most wonderful birthday present."
"I am delighted to dedicate the plaque commemorating Mr. Ed Mirvish's 90th
birthday," said Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone. "I believe that the life work of
Mr. Mirvish exemplifies what is remarkable in our city."
People of Toronto are invited to join Mr. Mirvish and his family in attending
the dedication. Speakers on hand to dedicate the plaque include:
- Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone (Ward 19 Trinity-Spadina)
- Russell Lazar, General Manager of Honest Ed's and the "birthday chairman" of
Mirvish Enterprises
- Mike Filey, Historian
- The Honourable Lincoln Alexander, former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario
- David Raymont, Heritage Toronto Board of Directors, Chair of the board's
Communications Committee
- Jim Paulson as Master of Ceremonies, radio announcer at 740 AM
Ed Mirvish's lasting contributions include founding Canada's first discount
retail establishment - Honest Ed's - in the 1940s, saving the Royal Alexandra
Theatre from demolition in 1963, building the Princess of Wales Theatre with
his son David in 1993, and developing Mirvish Village outside Honest Ed's at
581 Bloor St. W. He has also been awarded the Key to Toronto in recognition of
his many accomplishments and contributions and has been officially proclaimed
as Toronto's Good Will Ambassador.
"Heritage Toronto's goal is to create a greater appreciation for the courage,
vision and hard work of the people who are the heart of this city," said David
Raymont. "On this day, if you were to ask me where to find the heart of
Toronto, where to find its genius, generosity, and strength, I say you would
find it here - in the eyes of Honest Ed Mirvish."
