St. Clair Avenue West Transit Project to Proceed
Mayor David Miller announced today that the Divisional Court of Ontario has ruled that the St. Clair Avenue West Transit Improvements project can proceed.

In a decision released today, the Court concluded that the City of Toronto and the Toronto Transit Commission have the proper legal authority to carry out the work, clearing the way for the creation of a St. Clair Avenue West right-of way. The decision follows a judicial review held at the end of January 2006.

“We are very pleased with the Court’s decision and look forward to begin making transit improvements along St. Clair that will reduce congestion, enhance pedestrian and driver safety, and eliminate delays to transit service caused by heavy traffic during rush hours,” the Mayor said.

The Court’s decision also concluded that the City did undertake a comprehensive planning process. Two significant consultations were carried out resulting in the decision to create the St. Clair transit project.

The project will result in replacement of a 6.7 kilometre section of the St. Clair Avenue West streetcar tracks and trackbed reconstruction.
