Media Advisory - Electrical safety in rental accommodation
  
Toronto Fire Services has partnered with the Ontario Safety League, the Office of the Fire Marshal, the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, and the Electrical Safety Authority to promote and enhance safety awareness for college and university students living away from home in apartments and other accommodations.

What: Student safety awareness media conference
Date: Monday, August 21
Time: 10 a.m.
Location: Toronto Fire Academy, 895 Eastern Ave.

Students and their parents must be safety conscious when selecting accommodations while attaining higher education. Safety-minded behaviour, Ontario Fire Code compliance and how to avoid electrical hazards will be highlighted.

Participants include:
  • Doug Crawford, Deputy Fire Marshal, Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal
  • Brian Patterson, Ontario Safety League
  • Terry Boyko, Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, Deputy Fire Chief of Toronto Fire Services
  • Ted Olechna, Electrical Safety Authority
  • Joan Nicholas, mother of Marina Rae Nicholas, a woman who lost her life as a result of unsafe electrical equipment.


Betacam, DVD and transcripts showing interviews and B-roll pertaining to this student safety initiative will be available to media.
