Mayor Miller comments on passing of Gino Empry

“Toronto lost a cultural icon and one of its most colourful characters with the passing of Gino Empry this weekend,” said Mayor David Miller. “Gino’s love of the performing arts and his devotion to promoting local talent was recognized throughout the entertainment industry as being second to none.

“He was an innovator as well as an impresario and his role in the evolution of Toronto as a global cultural centre will never be forgotten.”

Mr. Empry, a life-long Torontonian, was a recipient of the City of Toronto’s award of Merit in 1993. The award was the highest the City presented prior to amalgamation and was given to individuals recognized for outstanding contributions in a variety of fields, including the arts.

“Gino was one-of-a-kind and he will be missed by many,” Mayor Miller added.
