Nomination deadline for 2006 Green Toronto Awards fast approaching

Nominations for the second annual Green Toronto Awards - The City of Toronto’s Environmental Awards of Excellence close on February 24 at 5 p.m. The Green Toronto Awards are an opportunity for committed and dedicated individuals, community groups and companies in the City of Toronto to be recognized for their contributions to the greening of Toronto. The Awards honour initiatives that are changing the face of our city and impacting our environmental health and sustainability.

To be eligible, nominated projects, initiatives, individuals or companies must operate or reside within the City of Toronto and must have been in progress during 2005. Elected officials, City of Toronto staff including agencies, boards, commissions and special purpose bodies (ABCs), and previous winners of Green Toronto Awards are not eligible. However, program/projects of ABCs can be eligible to receive an Environmental Achievement Award.

“The Green Toronto Awards are a wonderful way to recognize those residents, groups and businesses who are working hard to ensure a vibrant Toronto of the future that’s clean, green and healthy,” said Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone. “As Chair of the Roundtable on the Environment, I strongly encourage residents to submit their nominations and share their inspiring stories with their fellow Torontonians.”

Awards will be presented in partnership with the City of Toronto and Green Living Enterprises along with corporate and media sponsors: Community Projects (Loblaw Companies Limited), Energy Conservation (AutoShare), Environmental Awareness (Toronto Hydro), Green Design (Roots), Health (Ace Bakery), Leadership (Toronto Community Foundation), Market Transformation (Perfectly Natural), Water Efficiency (City of Toronto Water), and Youth (TD Bank Financial Group).

Three Awards of Excellence recipients will be selected by a panel of judges in each of the nine categories. One winner in each category (excluding agencies, boards, commissions and special purpose bodies) will also receive a Green Toronto Award and $5,000 to donate to the environmental organization of their choice. All winners will be recognized at a public reception hosted by the City of Toronto on Tuesday, May 2 at Toronto City Hall.
