Call before you dig to prevent fire and explosions

At 11:21 a.m. yesterday morning, Toronto Fire Services received a call about a ruptured three-inch natural gas main in a parking lot at Don Mills Plaza, 939 Lawrence Ave. E. The natural gas main was ruptured by a contractor. Five fire apparatus with 20 firefighters responded to the call and were able to stop the leak.

A leaking natural gas line has significant explosive potential, as was experienced when seven people were killed at a plaza in the southwest area of Bloor Street West and Poplar Avenue on April 24, 2003.

Before digging, individuals must call Ontario One Call at 1-800-400-2255 to prevent danger and disruption to the City's underground infrastructure. The law states that you must call Ontario One Call so that underground wires or pipes can be located before you dig on your property for major landscaping or renovations.
