Media Advisory - Toronto fire fighters’ off-duty awards
  
The Toronto Professional Fire Fighters’ Association will honour off-duty deeds of Toronto Fire Fighters at their annual luncheon.

Date: Friday, April 28
Time: 12:30 p.m. - award presentation at 1:15 p.m.
Location: Sheraton Centre, Dominion Ballroom, 123 Queen St. W.

The Bernard “Ben” Bonser Award
Awarded to a Local 3888 member who during the year of 2005, while off duty, made a rescue or was involved in saving the life of an individual in a hazardous or threatening situation. This year’s winner is Fire Fighter Brian McAlinden from Station 231. Fire Fighter McAlinden, while on his way home through the Town of Brooklin, noticed a man hanging from a pavilion in Grass Park. Fire Fighter McAlinden removed a noose from the victim and successfully revived him via CPR. The victim has since fully recovered and later met with Brian to thank him.

The Roy Silver Award
Awarded to a Local 3888 member who during the year of 2005, while off duty, performed first aid or CPR. The winner of this award is Fire Captain James Hart from Station 134. Captain Hart was with his family on board the Toronto Island Ferry when a woman collapsed from a heart attack. Captain Hart performed chest compressions while he instructed her husband to do ventilations. After two minutes of CPR, a pulse was regained.

Al Pearsall Award
Awarded to a Local 3888 member who during the year of 2005, while off duty, contributed time and effort toward the improvement of his or her community. This year’s winner is Fire Fighter Mark Foley from Station 245. Fire Fighter Foley has shown a positive attitude and enthusiasm for the students of St. Mary’s school. Fire Fighter Foley has donated sports equipment, school supplies and countless hours for the betterment of the school. Fire Fighter Foley has been nominated for this award by the school’s principal.

Box 12 Award
Awarded to a Local 3888 member who during the year of 2005, while off duty, volunteered his or her efforts to directly benefit Toronto Fire Fighters. This year’s winner is Fire Fighter Bill Cooney, who is being recognized for the invaluable assistance he provided in the planning and construction of Toronto Fire Service’s new Hazardous Materials Response vehicle Hazard 332.
