Mayor David Miller, Councillors Pam McConnell (Ward 28, Toronto
Centre-Rosedale) and Kyle Rae (Ward 27, Toronto Centre-Rosedale) joined
representatives of Parks, Forestry and Recreation, Toronto Public Library,
Children’s Services and the Wellesley Early Learning Centre to officially open
Toronto’s newest community centre and public library branch, located at 495
Sherbourne St. at Wellesley Avenue today.
"This is a great day for Toronto - seeing this much-needed building open its
doors,"said Mayor David Miller. "This facility will be a downtown community
icon, and will serve residents’ recreational and learning needs for generations
to come."
"Wellesley Community Centre is a symbol of Our Common Grounds in that it
enlivens us and meets the diverse needs of our communities, in partnership with
other City services such as the Library and Children’s Services," said Brenda
Librecz, General Manager of Parks, Forestry and Recreation.
The fully-accessible, 53,100 square foot facility includes Parks, Forestry and
Recreation’s newest community recreation centre, Toronto Public Library’s St.
James Town Branch, and a children’s early learning centre operated by the Child
Development Institute in conjunction with Children’s Services.
The project was achieved through a three-party partnership with Parks, Forestry
and Recreation, Children’s Services and the Toronto Public Library. It will be
a welcome addition to the community of St. James Town, which has one of the
highest density populations in Canada.
The official opening featured greetings, a ribbon cutting, cake cutting, a wide
variety of entertainment including live music, theatre, story-telling and
facility tours.
