Aba Bayefsky exhibit coming to the Market Gallery | | | | |
Colourful and dramatic paintings, drawings and graphics by Aba Bayefsky will
open at the Market Gallery on October 8 and run until February 5, 2006. This
extensive exhibit will feature close to 60 works, including portraits and
scenes of Toronto.
Aba Bayefsky (1923-2001) was a distinguished Canadian artist who began his
career in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an official war artist during the
Second World War. While he pursued his art through paintings, watercolours,
prints and drawings, he taught for many years at the Ontario College of Art in
Toronto. Bayefsky was awarded the Order of Canada in 1979.
Bayefsky wrote in 1994, "My career as an artist has been an adventure from the
very beginning. Standing before a canvas and bringing a work of art to life is
as exciting as any act of creation."
Bayefsky's subject matter focused primarily on people but he also produced
portfolios of prints based on various legends. Bayefsky studied and traveled
widely throughout Europe, India and Japan but the people and neighbourhoods of
Toronto always inspired him. Some of Bayefsky's most significant works include
portraits of his friends and colleagues, as well as 'tattooed' people who
captured his imagination.
The Market Gallery is a program of the City's Culture Division and offers
changing exhibitions dedicated to Toronto's art, history and culture as well as
educational programs for school groups and adults. Located inside the South St.
Lawrence Market, in Toronto's oldest neighbourhood, the main gallery occupies
the 19th century City Council Chamber, which is all that remains of the City
Hall that stood on this site from 1845 to 1899.
Admission is free. The Market Gallery is located on the second floor of the
South St. Lawrence Market, 95 Front St. E. Gallery hours are Wednesday through
Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from
noon to 4 p.m.
