End date: January 31, 2011
Start time: 12:00 pm
End time: 5:00 pm
Description: In the 1820s and 1830s, Toronto (or “Muddy York” as it was then called) was mocked in the newspapers for being “destitute of good side-paths” and containing “…foul and disgusting lanes and alleys, filthy gutters, and muddy unpaved streets…” Soon after Toronto was incorporated in March 1834, Council hired David Gibson, Provincial Land Surveyor, to design and build wood planked sidewalks for the new city.
- This exhibit uses archival maps, Council minutes, by-laws, and David’s own diaries and field notes to tell the story of how the city sidewalks, a vital piece of infrastructure that we take for granted today, were first created.
- It also includes nineteenth-century surveying instruments, some of which belonged to David Gibson himself.
- While at the museum explore the Georgian-style farmhouse where David lived with his wife and seven children and learn what life was like as a nineteenth-century land surveyor and farmer.

Other fees: $Plus applicable taxes
