The heritage timber post and beam building is the former home of MacGregor Socks and was an opportunity for us to reclaim and transform a piece of the city's industrial history.
Stantec's architects, interior designers and engineers designed a flexible, high-quality workspace that fosters collaboration, innovation, sustainable design excellence and our commitment to city building.
Two incisions were made through the space to create two-storey volumes to connect the space via a public zone featuring reception, meeting rooms, design library and cafés. The internal stairs encourage casual interaction among multi-disciplinary professionals. The studio environment features a low-profile and flexible layout that maximizes daylight and views. A raised floor system offers under floor air, power and data distribution, exposing the beautiful wood structure to emphasize the building’s industrial heritage.
Stantec targeted LEED®CI Gold. The environmental goals were achieved through indirect low wattage task lighting, daylight and occupancy sensors, low flow showers, solar powered faucets, dual flush toilets, use of reclaimed/recycled materials and low VOC finishes. |

| Event information: |
Visitors will be guided through the space by volunteer architects, designers and engineers. The guides will explain how the space was re-purposed from industrial to studio use. Specifically visitors will better understand our design strategy and how rigorous sustainable goals enriched our work. The tour will be structured with a series of stations where visitors can learn about various sustainable design initiatives such as
• raised floor systems with air distribution
• indirect lighting and daylight control
• use of reclaimed and recycled building materials
• practical water conservation strategies
Since the tour guides will be professionals working in sustainable design, there will be opportunities for discussion and hopefully an informative dialogue about the role of design and construction in our environment. |
