This new church has been conceived as a reflection of the liturgical vision of its Baptist congregation. This vision has a dual focus - fellowship, which the church characterizes as horizontal relationships between people, and spirituality, which is seen as a vertical relationship between people and God. The church serves both as a place of worship with a sanctuary for 1,600 and as a focal point of activity for the Chinese community in Scarborough, offering recreation (a large gymnasium) banquet facilities, and meeting places. Siting/Urban Design: The church is nestled into a clearing in a remnant wood lot, along Kennedy Road in suburban Scarborough. It is the focal point of a 200 seat chapel and a point of reference as one moves through the public circulation spaces of the church. Environmental Issues: The project included the City of Toronto’s first approved bio swale parking lot. Storm water is processed through a sequence of swales that are planted with specific plant materials and special soils. The project also achieved an extremely high level of energy efficiency at a very low cost, through a designed building envelope and heat recovery system.

Event information:
The Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church has been a local church in Scarborough since 1986, and has moved to the present new building in September 2007. This is a building of architectural, religious, social and cultural significance. This is a place of worship and to show love to our communities. Serving from a Christian faith, the church has provided a wide variety of community services.
The Open Day on May 24 will begin with a celebration between 10am to 10:45am in the auditorium. Tours will be led by Teeple Architects between 10:45 to 3pm. There will be a community fair comprising booths with games, refreshments and introduction of our services, and show performances such as musical drama and children's choir. Metro Police and Fire Services have agreed to participate with a police car and fire truck for demo and photos.
