Toronto's oldest house, Scadding Cabin was built by the Queen's Rangers in 1794 for John Scadding, clerk to Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe. The one-room cabin is constructed of squared, white pine logs with dovetailed corners. In 1879 the York Pioneer's Association moved the cabin from its original site on the east bank of the Don River (where present-day Queen Street crosses the Don Valley) to its present location at Exhibition Place, an act now recognized as the city's earliest example of architectural preservation. Scadding Cabin is furnished as a typical settler's first house, with artifacts dating from the 1790s to the 1850s. The year 1879 was the beginning of the CNE; the York Pioneers worked with the CNE's founders to move the cabin on the grounds to celebrate the fair's inauguration. The cabin, originally called the "Simcoe Cabin," was later renamed "Scadding Cabin," to honour John Scadding's son, Henry Scadding, Toronto's first renowned historian. Henry was a founding member of the YPHS and its president for 18 years. The cabin is open during Doors Open, for the July 1st week-end, and every day during the Exhibition. Admission is free.

Event information:
Enthusiastic members of the York Pioneer and Historical Society maintain the cabin and costumed volunteers will happily answer your questions about the early history of York (Toronto). Post cards, publications about the cabin, and booklets of 19th-century recipes are available. On Sunday a performer will be portraying the part of Lt.-Governor John Simcoe.
