This was a recent architectural project (2002-2005), to partially demolish, totally renovate, and add to, an existing 500 sm, circa 1890, church, in order to create a 1,700 sm/18,000 sf, universally-accessible, barrier-free, 4-storey, single-aisled, basilica and community centre. The existing church building was gutted and tripled in size, in order to: a) repair a decaying building; b) modernize and improve energy-efficiency to the building’s systems and envelope; c) enlarge the usable floor area and functional flexibility; d) improve the site landscaping and relationship to the street, and, e) imbue the building with a Serbian personality. The new building has a church-hall with a carved-wood iconostasis spanning the sanctuary; a large apsidal choir niche; upper and lower social halls (one with stage + greenrooms); commercial kitchen; boardroom; library; classrooms; washrooms; storage + utility rooms; two grand staircases, and a 4-stop elevator. Stylistically, the building synthesizes Serbian late-Byzantine architectural-styles and iconography, together with site, OBC, and bylaw requirements. It has many copper domes, cupolas, and trim; and great lighting & wood panels !

Event information:
Beautiful stone floors; barrel-vaulted and domed ceilings; incredible natural and artificial lighting; hand-carved-wood doors and panelling; painted wall murals; a great example of building transformation from 1890 to 2008; a place to experience the Serbian late-Byzantine architectural style; a place to see how an old building may be made new again, and fully accessible on all floors; The architect will be present.

Other information:
No limitations. Elevator provided for access to all four storeys.
