Over twenty years after the War of 1812 had ended, what defined a Canadian patriot? Was it unswerving loyalty to England - or striving for a more independent Canada? Initially a sidebar to the Napoleonic wars in Europe, the War of 1812 became very real for the people of Toronto on April 27, 1813 when the Town of York was invaded and occupied by American forces for the first and only time in its history. War Stories, an exhibition of original letters, maps, art and books from the Library's Special Collections, follows the stories of a diverse cast of characters - the heroes who emerged, the lesser-known but key figures who drove the action, and the supporting cast of players who were too often the victims of war.
